About the Company
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong hands-on coding, Microsoft SQL Server, build automation, and CI/CD experience to help design, develop, and automate modern engineering and development environments. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working across software development, database engineering, build and release processes, automation, and distributed systems. The successful candidate will help transform manual and complex development activities into reliable, scalable, and repeatable engineering processes. You will work closely with software engineering teams to improve the way applications are developed, built, tested, deployed, monitored, and operated. A strong understanding of Microsoft SQL Server is particularly important, along with hands-on experience developing automation and build solutions. The role also provides opportunities to work with cloud technologies, microservices, data platforms, distributed systems, and emerging AI/ML capabilities supporting large-scale rail logistics and enterprise operations.
About the Role
The successful candidate will help transform manual and complex development activities into reliable, scalable, and repeatable engineering processes, working closely with software engineering teams to improve the way applications are developed, built, tested, deployed, monitored, and operated, with a particular focus on Microsoft SQL Server, automation, and build solutions, as well as opportunities to work with cloud technologies, microservices, data platforms, distributed systems, and emerging AI/ML capabilities supporting large-scale rail logistics and enterprise operations.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain production-quality software using C#/.NET, Java, Python, C++, or similar programming languages.
- Develop backend services, APIs, automation tools, and reusable software components.
- Contribute to scalable and highly reliable distributed systems and applications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve application, database, build, deployment, and production issues.
- Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, code reviews, and incident retrospectives.
- Follow software engineering standards, secure coding practices, and source-control best practices.
- SQL Server & Database Engineering
- Develop, maintain, and optimize solutions using Microsoft SQL Server.
- Write and maintain complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and database scripts.
- Support database integration with applications, build processes, testing environments, and deployment pipelines.
- Troubleshoot database performance, connectivity, deployment, and data-related issues.
- Automate database builds, configuration, deployment, testing, and maintenance activities.
- Establish repeatable processes for managing database changes across development, test, and production environments.
- Work closely with application teams to improve database reliability, performance, and operational efficiency.
- Build & Automation
- Build and automation is a critical component of this role.
- Design, develop, and maintain automated software build and deployment processes.
- Build reliable and repeatable CI/CD pipelines for application and database deployments.
- Automate development, build, testing, packaging, and release activities.
- Establish an effective engineering workflow connecting source code, application builds, SQL Server databases, automated testing, and deployments.
- Identify manual, repetitive, or inefficient engineering processes and develop automation solutions to eliminate them.
- Develop reusable build scripts, automation tools, and engineering utilities.
- Improve build reliability, deployment speed, consistency, and traceability.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to establish standards and best practices for automated builds and releases.
- Support continuous improvement of the overall development and engineering environment.
- Platform & Distributed Systems
- Develop APIs, automation, and reusable services that improve platform integration.
- Design and operate scalable software solutions across data centers, edge environments, and cloud platforms.
- Support microservices, messaging systems, data platforms, serverless environments, and other distributed technologies.
- Develop monitoring, observability, and alerting solutions for critical applications and services.
- Collaborate with application and platform teams to improve system reliability, scalability, and performance.
- Contribute to cloud-based and AI/ML-enabled engineering initiatives where applicable.
- Operational Excellence
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues.
- Participate in incident management, root-cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
- Support highly available and reliable production systems.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation as required.
- Continuously improve system performance, reliability, automation, and operational processes.
Qualifications

- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, application development, automation, build engineering, or a related field.
- Strong hands-on programming experience in at least one modern language, such as:
- C# / .NET
- Java
- Python
- C++
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
- Strong SQL development experience, including queries, stored procedures, functions, database scripting, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
- Hands-on experience with build automation, CI/CD, DevOps, or deployment automation.
- Experience creating automated and repeatable software development and deployment processes.
- Experience integrating application builds with database builds, testing, and deployment processes.
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and source-control practices.
- Ability to work across application, database, build, automation, and infrastructure environments.
- Experience troubleshooting complex application, database, build, and deployment issues.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
